Outdoor Spaces Project
Our Mission: Our mission is to create a safe, functional, and engaging outdoor environment that promotes social interaction, supports student well-being, and strengthens the sense of community among students, families, faculty, and neighbors.
Critical Need for our Outdoor Spaces: Through in person interviews of staff, BCS families, and community members, the outdoor spaces committee determined a collection of challenges related to the use of the school’s outdoor spaces by our stakeholders.
- Indoor recess is stressful and chaotic - school needs outdoor recess capacity rain or shine.
- The field is unusable during the rainy season - current field gets flooded and muddy in the rain.
- There is a lack of seating and gathering spaces for students, families, and community members who utilize the outdoor space.
- There is a need to expand opportunities for most popular blacktop games and for middles schoolers to have space to hang out.
Concept Proposal: An initial concept proposal was approved by the PTA, and is being submitted by Principal Presley to PPS, so we can be assigned a project manager. This initial proposal includes:
- Canopy/shade structures to enable outdoor recess
- Multi-use seating
- Walking path around field
- Convert portion of field to turf
How does this proposal consider the seismic retrofitting?
All elements in the proposal were chosen to ensure that any seismic retrofitting efforts would take priority, and any work we do to the current space will be modular or removable if needed for future seismic work. The committee is keeping close tabs on updates to the timeline and needs of those safety measures.
