We need you!  The Beverly Cleary School Site Council is in need of adult family representatives to serve in the coming school year.  The Site Council is an opportunity for parents and community representatives to have valued input in the planning and implementation of the School Improvement Plan.  The time commitment is not immense as the  Site Council meets only once a month for about an hour.

If you are interested in serving your school in this way, please contact Dana Barbarick.  We have a meeting from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesday, April 20 in the library. Feel free to come and check it out!

New Adult Reps

• Need 2 more parents for Site Council – check for names of those interested at beginning of the year.

Late Opening Days

• 2 since last meeting – planning and reviewing all-school writing experience on the subject of Food
• Each grade level wrote developmentally appropriate prompts
• Students wrote for 30 minutes on January 12th
• Afterwards, whole staff looked at the continuum of writing K-8, focusing specifically on content
• Next Step – developing “no excuse” words for each grade level   

Curriculum Maps

• All grade levels finished with Sept.-Jan. maps and working towards finishing the rest of the year (due the 3rd week in April)
• Question: Can we have links to the standards?

• If Measures 66 & 67 pass, we’ll know staffing by end of February

High School Redesign

•  Grant HS possibly to become a magnet school – How would that change Beverly Cleary’s focus?

Curriculum Maps

• Rob, Koren and Tricia shared writing curriculum maps from 8th grade science, kindergarten and 2nd grade respectively.
• The next step (after individuals complete) for each class will be to combine maps into grade level team maps, then to combine into a school-wide continuum map – hopefully by June 

Professional Development Update

• First Monday of each month, teachers are sharing 3 writing samples from each grade (below, at and above benchmark levels)
• December late opening – continue work on writing

Student Growth Targets

• These are targets for kids performing under  benchmark – individual growth targets
• These are sent by ODE as a part of NCLB and the targets are essentially the state benchmarks

Beverly Cleary School (BCS) adult family members need to elect a couple of Adult Family Representatives (AFRs) to the school Site Council.

What will Site Council do this year?
The purpose of the Site Council is to increase BCS student achievement.
The Site Council will work on the BCS school improvement plan, a school satisfaction survey, and will provide valuable feedback to Principal Teri Geist.

Who serves on Site Council?
Site Council has a balanced membership of teachers, classified staff, adult family representatives and a community member.

How often does Site Council meet?
Site Council meets during the school year for an hour or so about once a month.

Should I nominate myself or someone else for Site Council?
Site Council is looking for adult family representatives who have experience with or skills that would support our work.  We hope to maintain a balance between the two sites, e.g., have a rep with a student at the Hollyrood site and a rep with a student at the Fernwood site (if you have a student at both sites, that makes it easy).  Some work outside of meetings is to be expected.

How do I nominate someone (including myself)?
Please submit a brief statement of nomination (moderately sized paragraph) at either site office no later than Monday, November 16.  Please identify which site your student attends and why you are a good choice for Site Council.  A survey with the nominating blurbs and a ballot will be posted on this website and will be open through Friday, November 20.  We will then tally up the votes.

• Discussion about where site council priorities came from and whether these are still our priorities
• Priority regarding “common teacher learning and planning for integrated learning” is being met by teachers during PD time this year – though no longer a priority of site council, there is agreement that we would like to hear news of this work’s progress
• The main Site Council’s priority is the School Improvement Plan – as a Site Council, we will look at SIP checkpoints and see how we’re  coming along and how (monitoring implementation)

Principal’s Report

• SIP:  Changes have been made to the SIP per recommendations from area director: test scores have been removed, shortened version, summaries added – goals are fine.
• Test Scores: Discrepancy in writing compared with reading and math – conventions are the biggest challenge for our writers
• Writing PD: How do we teach writing? (teachers working on curriculum mapping); What are grade level expectations for incoming students? (teachers looking at work samples)  Teri to bring examples of work so far in curriculum mapping
• Young Audiences – giving opportunities to upper grades – Ramona Quimby play – tryouts in December
• Enrollment Report – same enrollment because of heavy lower grades – we need to work to keep kids here after 6th grade
• Curriculum Map Grant Funding – not needed for grades 2-8 (because of imbedded PD) but could use for K-1

Update on Funding for teachers wanting to plan over the summer (Carol & Linda)

• Tom drafted grid by subject/class

• Time could be used for curriculum mapping and methods to create longer term plan (compacting, differentiation, etc.)

-  Take two content areas per year
