Run For the Arts

Soon our students will be asking their friends and family (some will ask neighbors, too) to sponsor them as they participate in a "fun run" that directly benefits their experiences in the arts at Beverly Cleary School.  The Run for the Arts is scheduled for April 6th, with a make-up day (if it’s raining on 4/6) on April 13th.  Students run around the track at Grant.

Thanks to the participants and their sponsors, Beverly Cleary School has been able to provide different kinds of arts experiences for our students to reinforce the integration of the arts into their classroom curriculum.  Additionally, we have been able to provide extra curricular opportunities in the arts for our students.

Take a survey on high schools, transfer policy

How should Portland Public Schools select locations for its high schools? Share your opinion about this critical aspect of the ongoing High School System Design process, as well as the school district’s transfer policy, in this 14-question survey.  The survey will close on Friday, March 19 before spring break begins.

Stay informed about High School System Design by watching Channel 28. PPS is broadcasting related meetings – including a student gathering, school board discussion and board-sponsored community session – on a rotating basis. View schedule

Have these spring-like days gotten you thinking about your summer garden?

The eighth-graders are raising money for their trip to Washington, DC and one of their projects is a bedding plant sale.  Order forms (download here) are due in either office by April 9th and pick-up day is Saturday, May 8th, in time for Mother's Day!  Thank you for your support of our eighth-graders!

Shadowing Opportunity for students interested in attending BCS

Beverly Cleary School is offering a shadowing opportunity for students currently in grades 5, 6 and 7 who may be interested in attending our school. Since we are not accepting many transfer students, only those students who currently reside in the Beverly Cleary attendance area may shadow. If you would like to participate, please fill out this application (a parent signature is required for all students who shadow).

The date for shadowing will be February 24th, 2010. Applications must be received by February 22nd at 3:00 PM. The shadowing opportunity will be from 9:00-10:00 AM. Students who are shadowing will meet their host student in the main office.

Parents must accompany the student to the school and sign them into the office at 8:45 AM. Parents must also provide transportation back to their regular school at 10:00 AM.

Safer Routes to School

Beverly Cleary School is a member of the Safer Routes to School (SR2S) program. SR2S encourages students and families to get to and from school in ways that reduce traffic, build strong bodies and clear minds, and provide a cleaner environment.

All second and fifth grade families recently received in the mail an order form from Safer Routes.  The order form serves as a fundraiser, earning our school $5 for each order form turned in!  If we mail all our forms back, BCS will get over $500!

The order form provides FREE resources for families to find fun ways to get around the city of Portland.  Options include Metro's terrific "Walk There" booklet, a beautiful pocket sized guide to many areas of our region with history, a walking map and ideas for an active outing with your family.  Or maybe you'd like a free bike bell, some information on your nearest bus route or a coupon for a bike helmet.

Choose something of interest and return that form!!  Go find it right now!  It's a super easy way to earn some money for our school.

We want your socks & underwear!

Celebrate Valentine's Day this year by warming your heart and someone else's toes! The Beverly Cleary School Sock and Underwear Drive, benefiting the PTA Clothing Center, is on!  Please donate new socks and underwear between February 1st and February 12th. Collection bins will be at both campuses. All sizes are needed: from extra small (for the very little ones, ages 4 years old) to XXXL.

The PTA Clothing Center which is located at Marshall High School serves PPS students who are in need of clothing, and so far this year they have served over 1275 students! Each student who "shops" at the clothing center gets a few pairs of new socks and underwear, and their stock is extremely low.  This clothing drive is taking the place of the Giving Tree this year (usually in December). Thanks for your donations!

If you weren't able to attend, or if you may have missed a topic or two, click here to open/download the presentation (PDF file) from that evening.

How will HS redesign affect next year's freshmen?

Families of students who are entering high school next year may have specific questions and concerns about how High School System Design will affect them.  PPS staff have complied a list of questions and answers to help with this transition.

Grant HS Shadow Opportunity

The date for eighth-graders to participate in shadowing a Grant student is Tuesday, February 9th 2010.  A permission form (download here) must be returned to Grant by January 29th. Shadow Opportunity days at Grant High School are restricted to eighth-grade students interested in attending Grant High School as freshmen next year who have completed all appropriate paperwork by the deadline.  Current eighth-graders will be matched with a ninth-grader.  If you would like to request a ninth-grade host, you may do so; however the ninth-grader must be a student in good standing for both academics and citizenship.

Students must report to the Library on the main floor of Grant H.S. at 7:45 a.m. to sign in and meet their host student.  Parents must check their students in; please allow up to an hour for check-in. Students will not be allowed to shadow if we have not received the appropriate paperwork.
